What is Photobiomodulaiton?
Photobiomodulation goes by a few different names including low-level light therapy (LLLT) and red light therapy. Light energy triggers a biological response in the body’s cells. When light of a specific wavelength is applied to an area, it interacts with the cells in that area, stimulating them to produce more energy and initiate a healing response.
Why use Photobiomodulation?
One of the greatest advantages of photobiomodulation is its non-invasive nature. Unlike traditional dental procedures that often require incisions or injections, PBM can be performed using a handheld device that emits low-level light directly onto the affected area. This means that patients experience minimal discomfort and require little to no recovery time.
PBM is a safe and effective treatment option for patients of all ages. It has been extensively researched and has been shown to be highly effective in promoting tissue regeneration and reducing pain and inflammation. It is one of the few things in medicine where there is no downside to using it.
How does South Austin Oral Surgery use Photobiomodulation?
We use photobiomodulation at South Austin Oral Surgery primarily at the time of tooth extraction. We shine a red light on the extraction site and the light promotes healing. LED PBM is included with the cost of all extractions at our office.
